January is a popular time for job hunting, and competition can be high
January is the 5th most popular month in terms of new candidates registering with us – especially accounting and finance professionals – so although it may not be the busiest period for job seekers, there’s still a fair few people looking for accounting and finance jobs after Christmas.
It’s also been reported that there are more job searches in Australia in January than any other time of year, so it’s likely that competition among job seekers will be high during this time.
October is our busiest month in terms of new accounting and finance candidate registrations, followed by July – which is probably when your competition will be at its highest.
If you’re thinking about looking for new roles in the new year, we’d recommend registering with a recruitment agency early in January so you’ll be front of mind when the job openings start rolling in.
There are less jobs advertised in January
Interestingly, although the number of job searches peaks in January, the number of jobs ads posted is low compared to the rest of the year, indicating that there aren’t many employers making hires straight after Christmas.
However, many jobs do go unadvertised, and recruiters often turn to directly to their existing candidates and networks before posting on job sites.
It’s still worth registering with an agency and meeting with some recruiters to make sure you don’t miss out.
The start of the year is generally a good time to apply for new jobs
Recruitment budgets have normally been approved in January and employers will be looking for fresh talent to fill any existing skills gaps and help them deliver on 2020 targets.
According to Top Resume, January and February are the best times of the year to look for a job, particularly long-term, full time roles. However, it’s likely that employers will get off to a slow start when it comes to hiring – but patience should pay off!
